The dead sea is the lowest place on earth in terms of elevation and the high salinity of the water will cause you become extremely buoyant when swimming around. After lunch, we will make our way south from the Dead Sea to Wadi Elmujib to to explore what may be considered the Jordanian Grand Canyon. Wadi Elmujib is an endless a 1.5 km long slot canyon that snakes its way through the sandstone mountains. We'll hike to a large waterfall to swim in before hitting the road again for the town of Wadi Musa in the south of Jordan. Petra is magical; a city carved from the pink cliffs of Jebel al-Madhbah by the ancient Nabateans, a nomadic Arab tribe, between the 4th century BC and the 1st century AD. We will spend the next two days hiking through and exploring the wonders of this large archeological site, from the famous Treasury to the Royal Tombs and Little Petra. We'll wander through hidden caves, lesser visited locations, step into tombs cut into the mountains, see 6th century homes, and hike to the top of the Monastery to see the African Rift Valley below.
On Wednesday night, we will return to Petra for a spectacular candle lit event. We will see the ruins of Petra by night, Where over 5,000 candles light up your our path through the canyon of the Siq, the narrow gorge that snakes its way through the mountains to the stunning Treasury Monument. There, over 400 candles illuminate the facade of the Treasury and local Bedouin musicians perform around the ruins. It's magical.
