This underwater adventure takes us by private dive boat off the western coast of Mauritius Island in the southern Indian Ocean to swim and interact with three different cetacean species: humpback whales, sperm whales, and dolphins. During the winter months in the south Indian ocean, humpbacks and sperm whales migrate from the nutrient rich feeding grounds off Antarctica to the warm shallow water off the coast of Mauritius to breed and raise their calfs. What makes Mauritius unique is that both humpbacks and sperm whales migrate to this island, allowing us the opportunity to interact with these two different species.
DAY 1. SUNDAY, SEPT 8, 2019. ARRIVE IN BLACK RIVER, MAURITIUS
We will coordinate airport pickups throughout the day for those arriving at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport today. Flight details must be provided to us in advance of your arrival and we’ll send a car to pick you up and bring you to our villa near Black River on the west coast of Mauritius. We will meet for dinner at our house and go over the program, introduce the program coordinators and get to know each other from the comfort of our home here.
DAY 2-4. MONDAY - WEDNESDAY, SEPT 9-11, 2019. BLACK RIVER
After an early 4:45am breakfast at the house, we will set out each day at 5:30am for the dock, where we will load up and head out for the day by 6am to explore the ocean. With our captain, we’ll carefully look for whales and dolphins (each day will be different depending on our location) and once we find a group we will carefully approach them to see if they would like to swim with us.
We’ve been coordinating whale swimming trips for the past two years and can confirm it’s more of an art than a science in how to build relations with whales. We will break up into two diving groups, as no more than 4 participants may be in the water at any one time with the whales (with dolphins it’s different). Lead by our guides and free-diving staff, we’ll teach you how to approach and interact with the whales safely and how to not disturb them, as many of the whales here are nursing calfs and need lots of sleep.
We spend all morning looking for and swimming with cetaceans, and then settle on some of Mauritius’ beautiful secluded beaches for picnic lunches. In the early afternoon we will return to shore and have our afternoons free to explore the town, rest and edit photos. Dinners are on your own, but remember, we start each day very early, so heading to sleep early is a good idea.
DAY 5. THURSDAY, SEPT 12, 2019. THURSDAY. BLACK RIVER
Rest day! Today we’ll take a break from the early mornings and time spent on the boat looking for cetaceans to explore the island and relax on some of the spectacular beaches, hike in the lush green mountains, and enjoy some drinks in Mauritius. No scheduled activities today; lunch and dinner are on your own today.
DAY 6-8. FRIDAY-SUNDAY, SEPT 13-15, 2019. BLACK RIVER
We’re back to our 4:45am breakfast start for the last three days or the trip, as we return to the sea with our captain to swim with whales and dolphins! We’ll enjoy a concluding celebratory dinner together on our last night.
