Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula jets off the Siberian mainland into the Bering Sea in the North Pacific. It is home to unspoiled nature, thick boreal forests, volcanoes, hardy people, and few roads. Kamchatka's native population is made up of Iltemens, Koryaks and Evens-- traditional Siberian reindeer herding people.
This adventure takes participants into the remote wilderness, travelling hundreds of kilometres by snowmobile, to live with ethnic Even reindeer herders. Conditions are difficult, but the journey is absolutely incredible.
We first gather in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a fly-in only city surrounded by towering volcanic peaks and one of Russia's most strategic ports in the north Pacific. From there, we gather last minute supplies and head north by road to the town of Milkovo.
Our snowmobile expedition starts from the Ketachan Park Inspector's Camp outside Milkovo. We travel through the remote backcountry for four days to visit the base of the Ichinsky Volcano and an Even reindeer herding camp, continuing all the way to Esso village. Esso is situated above a natural hot spring and we spend a day recovering in warm waters and soft beds before heading out into the backcountry again.
We spend the next four days out on the land, travelling to ethnic Even reindeer herding camps and natural hot springs. Conditions are very rustic, as we shift from local hunting cabins to homestays, but this is all part of the expedition in the Kamchatka wilderness.
