Wildlife videographer Karim Iliya captures some insane footage from a humpback heat run off the coast of Tonga in the South Pacific. A heat run occurs when a female whale is ready to mate. She slaps her fin on the surface of the water to alert nearby males, who will then gather and proceed to race in order to compete for mating rights.
This epic footage was filmed underwater by Karim Iliya while free-diving at about 10 metres depth. Shot on a Canon ID X Mark ii at 60 fps in underwater housing, you can see around a dozen adult male humpbacks pass by at one forth actual speed. Their elegance and determination is mesmorizing.
