Itinerary

(subject to change)

Day 1 :: Saturday, November 4, 2017 :: arrive in Lima

Everyone will arrive in Lima today and we will meet at the hotel lobby at 4pm to set out on a small exploration of the city as well as enjoy an introduction dinner and trip briefing on the coast. Lima is famous for its ceviche and fresh seafood. As individuals will be arriving at different times, we will coordinate pick ups and rendezvous points accordingly as the trip gets closer.

Day 2 :: Sunday, November 5, 2017 :: Lima / Cusco

We will return to Lima’s airport in the morning to catch out flight to Cusco, high in the Peruvian Andes. Cusco sits at 3,400 metres above sea level, and you’ll feel it, normally in the form of a mild headache. We will spend afternoon lightly exploring the city and adapting to the altitude. We will check out the central Plaza de Armas, the Qoricancha, Pisac market and have a very traditional Peruvian dinner in Cusco followed by an optional evening outing.

Day 3 :: Monday, November 6, 2017 :: Cusco / Ollantaytambo

After breakfast we will set off on a day trip from Cusco to the Urubamba River for some excellent whitewater rafting. Please remember to pack all of your stuff (luggage) into the bus in the morning, as we will not be returning to Cusco in the evening. We will drive north, stopping at the Sacred Valley town of Maras and Urubamba to explore the salt mines. We will then make our way to the town of Santa Maria, which is on the way up to Machu Picchu, where we’ll start our rafting adventure. Once we finish our day on the river surrounded by deep valleys and snow capped peaks, we will head off to the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here, we’ll have dinner and spend the night.

Day 4 :: Tuesday, November 7, 2017 :: Ollantaytambo / Machu Picchu

In the morning we will explore the town of Ollantaytambo and the Inca ruins that surround it. In the afternoon, we will board our train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. We’ll spend the night in Aguas Calientes and head off to sleep early, as we want to catch the first van up to Machu Picchu in the morning before sunrise.

Day 5 :: Wednesday, November 8, 2017 :: Machu Picchu / Cusco

We will wake up before sunrise and catch the earliest van up the mountain to the ruins at Machu Picchu. We will spend the day exploring Machu Picchu and climbing Huayna Picchu (Wayna Picchu) before heading back down to Aguas Calientes in the late afternoon. From Aguas Calientes, we will take a train back to Cusco by way of Ollantaytambo. Overnight in Cusco.

Day 6 :: Thursday, November 9, 2017 :: Cusco / La Paz

This morning we will head over to Cusco’s International Airport to catch our short flight to La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Once we arrive in La Paz, we will clear Bolivian immigration and customs procedures before heading to downtown La Paz. We will spend the afternoon exploring the city, one of the highest capitals of the world, from the El Alto Thursday Market to the Witch’s Market, the city’s downtown and even a Lucha Libre wrestling show (if happening). In the evening, after dinner, we will head over to the Marka Tambo, a peña (local folk music club) to enjoy a serious performance of Andean music.

Day 7 :: Friday, November 10, 2017 :: La Paz / Salar de Uyuni

In the morning we will depart from La Paz by road, heading south through the snow capped, barren landscape to the small town of Uyuni. The drive will take about 10 hours by 4x4 Jeep and we will stop along the way to check out small towns. Once we arrive we will head out onto the Salar de Uyuni salt flats for a sunset and evening activity. We will sleep in the salt hotel on the flats this evening.

Day 8 :: Saturday, November 11, 2017 :: Salar de Uyuni / La Paz

We will spend the day thoroughly exploring the massive salt flats at Salar de Uyuni. Starting before sunrise, we will head out onto the expansive, white salt flats to see the sun rise above them, offering some of the best light for photo taking. We will conduct photography lessons on the flats to help you capture the most out of this surreal experience. In the evening, we will return to the town of Uyuni and catch an evening flight back to La Paz. Overnight in La Paz

Day 9 :: Sunday, November 12, 2017 :: departures from La Paz

Participants will depart from La Paz today. We have no scheduled activities.
